Conjure Tales will be filmed using a blend of 16mm, Super 8, and HD video in the style of speculative documentaries and silent-era newsreels, remixing and expanding on archival content from the Idlewilders Magazine, a publication released weekly in the 1950s, as well as other archival ephemera.
Through poetic and surrealist visions, the film will incorporate texts from influential figures like Charles Chesnutt, Lil Armstrong, and W.E.B. Du Bois, who all had ties to Idlewild.
Founded in 1912 at the dawn of the Great Migration, Idlewild was publicly framed as a resort town for the Black middle class.
Yet beneath this narrative lay a vibrant and politically diverse community. Conjure Tales will weave together historical vignettes highlighting stories of domestic refugees, cooperative economics, and subversive political strategies.
