An Exhibition by George Thomas & Lydia Marie Hicks
4 George is a living archive, a speculative natural history museum that bends time and reanimates memory. This exhibition exists as both a dedication and an embodiment—for George Thomas, whose life’s work is rooted in honoring community, and for George Allen Hicks VI, the family name and alter ego assumed by artist Lydia Marie Hicks, in tribute to a lineage of historians, masons, and world-builders who helped to shape the Great Migration in the Black Radical Tradition.
Together, they build upon histories both written and unwritten, merging Black ecologies with surrealist interventions to conjure a space where material and memory collapse into one.
Through sculpture, film, installation, and ephemeral artifacts, 4 George constructs an archive that seeks to explore history as it lives—shifting, fluid, and deeply entangled with the land, the people, and the stories that refuse to be forgotten. Here, speculative fiction meets material evidence, and Black existence is rendered through its landscapes, process in labor, and limitless possibility.
In the spirit of those who built before us, 4 George is a communal offering, and a space for remembering.
